SOFTWARE: Orca, Pilot, Ableton Live, VCV Rack
DATE: January, 2025

Livecoding Sound is a Wintersession 2025 class at RISD Digital Media taught by Huichun. This class explores audio programming for performance and composition, focusing on Orca, a live coding environment for creating musical sequences. Designed for beginners, this course introduces algorithmic patterns, sound design techniques, and performance modules. Topics include, but are not limited to, sound synthesis, audio effects, sequencing, generative patterns, and data communication between applications using UDP and MIDI CC.

Through weekly exercises, students will engage in hands-on exploration of these tools and techniques. Class sessions combine demonstrations, workshops, discussions, and project support. By emphasizing playful, open-source projects, the course encourages students to demystify programming and coding in sound, be confident with the noise they make, and incorporate their own disciplines and personal interests into their creative work.
